In a match that promised much but delivered little, India and Canada had to settle for a point each as rain played spoilsport in their T20 World Cup Group A encounter at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida.
The match, which was supposed to be a thrilling contest between the cricketing giants and the minnows, never got underway as persistent rain forced the umpires to call off the match without a ball being bowled. The ground staff worked tirelessly to get the ground ready, but the heavens had other ideas.
The result means that India, who had already qualified for the Super 8s, finished the group stage unbeaten with seven points from three wins and a no-result. Canada, on the other hand, bowed out of the tournament with just one point from four matches.
The washout was a disappointment for the fans who had braved the inclement weather to come and support their teams. The Indian fans, in particular, were looking forward to seeing their team in action after a long gap. But it was not to be.
The match was also significant for another reason. It was the first time that India and Canada were facing each other in any format of senior international cricket (men/women). They had met once before in the U-19 World Cup 2002, where India had won by a whopping 242 runs.
The Super 8s of the T20 World Cup will now feature India, along with the other teams that have qualified from their respective groups. The Men in Blue will be looking to continue their unbeaten run and lift the trophy for the first time since 2007. As for Canada, they will go back to the drawing board and look to build on the positives from their campaign.
